JSS 2: Sound energy (I)

Sound is a form of energy produced by vibrating bodies. This vibration gives rise to sound waves.
                            sound wave

                     Types of sound
The different types of sound are:
1. Music: Music is a combination of regular notes
2. Noise: Noise is a combination of irregular notes
                    Production of sound
Sound is produced when a body vibrates. The vibrating body then causes the medium (air, liquid, and solid) around it to also vibrate. Sound requires a material medium for its propagation unlike light
                Transmission of sound
Sound is transmitted through a medium such as air, or water in the form of vibration or longitudinal wave.
Sound cannot travel in a vacuum (space) because it always requires a material medium for its propagation. The propagation of sound in the air cannot be seen whereas, it can be seen in water as waves.
             Characteristics of sound
The characteristics of sound waves are:
1. Pitch: Pitch means how high or low a sound is. The pitch of a sound depends on its frequency.
2. Loudness: Loudness means the amount of strength sound creates in the ear
3. Quality: Quality depends on the number and combination of harmonics and overtones it contains
  Properties of sound
Some of the properties of sound are:
1. Reflection
2. Refraction
3. Interference
                           Reflection
Reflection of sound refers to the sending back of the sound wave in the opposite direction when it hits an obstacle that has a rigid surface.
Echo: An echo is a sound heard after the reflection of sound waves from a plane surface
                           Refraction
Refraction of sound refers to the change in the direction of sound propagation when traveling from one medium to another. Refraction of sound is accompanied by a change in the speed and wavelength of the sound.
                           Interference
Interference is the combination of waves to give a larger or smaller wave.
